London City Lionesses have pulled off one of the biggest scalps in women’s football history, bringing in Spanish superstar Alexia Putellas on a free transfer.
The 32-year-old joins on a three-year deal, and there’s no understating what a coup this is for a club that only secured WSL promotion last season.
Alexia Putellas Leaves Barcelona as a True Legend
Alexia Putellas departs Barcelona after 14 trophy-laden years, during which she won more than 30 major honours, including 10 league titles and four Champions Leagues.
She’s Barcelona Femení’s all-time top scorer with 232 goals in 507 appearances, and lifted the Champions League trophy as captain in May as the Catalan giants crushed OL Lyonnes.
A true footballing legend, she’s the first player to win the Ballon d’Or Féminin twice. She remains the only player to have won the Ballon d’Or Féminin, Best FIFA Women’s Player and UEFA Women’s Player of the Year all in the same season.
On the international stage, Alexia Putellas helped Spain win their first World Cup in 2023, beating England in the final, and became the first Spain player to reach 100 caps.
And her incredible footballing prowess was on full display again at Euro 2025, where she was involved in more goals than any other player at the tournament.
A Huge Signing for London City Lionesses
Putellas’ arrival is a huge statement of intent for London City, and a big draw for WSL crowds heading into next season.
Speaking about the move, she said: “I am thrilled to embark on this new chapter with London City Lionesses.
“The club’s ambition and its steadfast commitment to growing as a women-only independent club resonate deeply with me. I look forward to making an impact on the pitch as we challenge for titles.”

Club owner Michele Kang added: “Alexia Putellas embodies the pinnacle of talent, dedication, and vision in women’s football. Her decision to join our independent, women-first club is a powerful endorsement of what we are building at London City and Kynisca.”
Kynisca is Michele Kang’s investment group dedicated to advancing women’s football and sport globally.
