Manchester City are on the verge of their first Women’s Super League title in a decade after Rebecca Knaak’s 91st-minute header snatched a crucial 1-0 win over Liverpool on Sunday.
The German defender’s diving effort – assisted by Alex Greenwood – trickled past Liverpool goalkeeper Jennifer Falk in the first minute of second-half injury time, sending the City fans into raptures.
Rebecca Knaak Secures a Hard-Fought Win for City
Despite the outcome, it was far from a comfortable afternoon for Andree Jeglertz’s side.
Liverpool were the better team in the first half and came closest to scoring when Grace Fisk struck the post from a corner. City managed just one effort on target before the break, with Khadija Shaw denied from close range.
City were much improved after half-time, with Lauren Hemp, rated player of the match, driving forward relentlessly. Kerolin and Shaw both went close before Knaak finally broke the deadlock with her late attempt.
The win leaves City 11 points clear of Arsenal at the top of the table, though the Gunners have three games in hand following their Champions League exploits.
If Arsenal win all three, the title will go to the final day, when City will face West Ham. On the same day, Arsenal will travel to Liverpool.
