England Defender Niamh Charles Swaps Chelsea for Manchester City in £500,000 Deal

Manchester City have signed England international Niamh Charles from Chelsea in a £500,000 deal, with the defender putting pen to paper on a three-year contract.

The End of Niamh Charles’ Trophy-Laden Spell at Chelsea

Niamh Charles joined Chelsea from Liverpool back in 2020, initially as an attacking option, before injuries elsewhere in the squad opened the door for her to establish herself at left-back.

From there, she quickly became a key player under Emma Hayes. She was also the youngest starter in Chelsea’s 2021 Women’s Champions League final defeat to Barcelona.

She now leaves Chelsea after six years at the club, having made 173 appearances and racking up an impressive 17 honours including five WSL titles, four FA Cups, three League Cups and a Community Shield.

A New Chapter Awaits at Manchester City

Charles joins Andrée Jeglertz’s side as City look to build on last season’s WSL and FA Cup double. She’ll wear the number 21 shirt, becoming its fifth owner during the club’s professional era.

“I’m really happy to be here, and I can’t wait to get started,” Charles said when signing for City. “What they’re building as a team is something I wanted to be a part of. It’s the perfect fit and hopefully we can have some good times together.”

In addition to her excellent club career, Niamh Charles has 34 international caps for the Lionesses and was part of England’s Euro 2025-winning squad, converting a penalty in the shootout victory over Spain in the final.

She’s also picked up World Cup runner-up honours in 2023, alongside wins in the Finalissima and the Arnold Clark Cup.
