Marc Skinner’s 5-year tenure at Manchester United has come to an end.
The 43-year-old has left the club by mutual consent, just weeks before the WSL 26/27 campaign gets underway.
Skinner Has Been a Controversial Figure With Supporters
Despite helping United reach the Women’s Champions League group stages for the first time last year, leading them to the runner-up position in three domestic cup finals, and seeing them lift the FA Cup in 2024, Marc Skinner has struggled to get fans on board.
He faced criticism for his strategy – and tactics – in big matches, stubbornness with team selections, and the lack of talent progressing from the academy and into the first team.
Fan animosity reached a peak in 2024 when supporters took banners to Leigh Sports Village demanding Skinner’s sacking.
And he’s recently faced more backlash around the lack of recruitment activity during the summer.
He’s Been Outspoken About the Lack of Investment
However, while fans were unforgiving, indeed, Marc Skinner was somewhat up against it when it comes to funds.
It’s a long-standing issue at the club: Skinner replaced Casey Stoney in 2021, who quit over frustrations at a lack of investment in the women’s team.
Having previously backed the club in the face of criticism, Skinner had become more outspoken on the topic of late, often referring to the squad’s lack of depth in post-match interviews and press conferences.
He didn’t have the same budget as other rivals; a factor that likely led to the team not managing to qualify for the Champions League this season.

Sources have suggested that Manchester United have already made good progress in their search for Marc Skinner’s replacement, with background checks already completed on prospective new managers.
