Is Sam Kerr’s Chelsea Stay Coming to an End?

Since joining Chelsea six years ago, Sam Kerr has scored 106 goals and helped the club lift 11 trophies, establishing herself as one of the greatest players in the history of women’s football.

But while her spell at Chelsea has been successful, it’s been anything but straightforward.

Now, with her contract expiring at the end of the season and no new deal in sight, is the clock ticking on her time in West London?

What’s Going On With Sam Kerr and Chelsea?

It has been a turbulent couple of years for both player and club.

Sam Kerr suffered an ACL injury in January 2024 that kept her sidelined for over 18 months, and she has spent much of this season working her way back to full fitness.

And her season stats reflect that: she’s had just two WSL starts all season, totalling 444 minutes of league football.

Chelsea won the domestic treble last season under Sonia Bompastor, but this campaign has been a disappointment, with the club out of the Women’s Champions League and unlikely to lift the WSL title.

Off the pitch, Kerr was found not guilty of causing racially aggravated harassment against a Metropolitan Police officer in 2025; a court case that played out very publicly and led to calls in her home country of Australia to strip her of the national captaincy.

Should Chelsea Keep Sam Kerr?

Former Scotland captain Rachel Corsie thinks so.

“To let go of Sam Kerr, without having a replacement there, would be a big step,” she told the BBC.

“There are so many teams around the world who would absolutely want a shot at signing her.”

Chelsea have the additional dilemma of there not being an obvious replacement for Kerr, plus she’s showing encouraging signs of returning to her best, netting four goals for Australia at the Women’s Asian Cup and scoring on her return to club action against Aston Villa.

If she did leave England, then a move to the NWSL looks most likely: Kerr remains the league’s record goalscorer; her partner, Kristie Mewis, is American; and speculation linking her with Denver Summit has already surfaced – though Kerr was quick to dismiss it.
