Tottenham made a winning start to their Women’s Super League season, beating West Ham 3-1, largely thanks to a double from recent signing Kirsty Hanson.
Hanson joined Spurs in June, reuniting with head coach Martin Ho, who she previously worked with at Manchester United. She arrived on the back of her best-ever season, having scored 12 WSL goals for Villa last term – and she’s continued that fine form.
How Hanson Made Her Mark
Signe Gaupset gave Spurs an early lead in the 18th minute, scuffing home a volley after Julie Blakstad headed across the box.
Hanson then got in on the act herself, doubling the lead on the half-hour mark as her shot clipped the foot of goalkeeper Constance Picaud before looping into the net.
She then took the game out of reach of West Ham, scoring a second with 16 minutes to go as she cut onto her left foot and curled a shot into the far top corner. Her two goals and dynamic overall performance earned her the Player of the Match award.
Viv Asseyi grabbed a stoppage-time consolation for West Ham, who fielded six of their ten summer signings.
A Debut Goal – But Not For the First Time
This wasn’t the first club debut goal for Hanson – in fact, she’s something of a specialist at netting in her first game.
She registered a brace and three assists in a 12-0 win over Villa on her senior debut for Manchester United in 2018, and she scored again on her Aston Villa debut in 2023.
