Arsenal made the perfect start to their Women’s Super League season, with new signing Lisa Baum grabbing the only goal of the game in a 1-0 win at Brighton.
A Dream Start
Baum, 19, glided through the Brighton defence just 10 minutes in and rifled her effort home off the crossbar, sealing all three points at Broadfield Stadium.
The German winger, who joined Arsenal from RB Leipzig this summer, made her debut alongside fellow new signings Misa Rodriguez, Ona Battle and Georgia Stanway, and was named player of the match.
Arsenal had further chances to extend their lead through Alessia Russo and Stina Blackstenius but couldn’t add to Baum’s opener.
Speaking after the game, she said: “I’m just happy that we have three points and won the game. And of course, to score on the debut, I’m just even happier.”
Describing the goal itself, she added: “I just received the ball in the middle and then I just carried on and dribbled and then I just looked for the opportunity to shoot in the top corner, so I just took it in and scored.”
Baum is Settling into Life in London
Having grown up playing in Germany, Baum admitted the step up to the WSL has taken some adjustment. “It’s quite a different level. Just intensity, time, you don’t have a lot of time anymore,” she said.
Baum will make her home debut next weekend against Crystal Palace at the Emirates.
