Manchester United have signed Mexican international Rebeca Bernal in a deal worth a reported £300,000.
She’s put pen-to-paper on a three-year deal and will become the first Mexican player to ever feature in the WSL.
Here are five other facts about the ex-Washington Spirit superstar.
1) Rebeca Bernal is Mexico’s National Team Captain
Rebeca Bernal captains the Mexico women’s national team, a role that represents more than 12 years of representing her country at the senior and youth levels.
She has 65 caps and seven goals for Mexico, including the winner in the 2023 Pan American Games final against Chile.
2) She’s a Decorated International
Alongside her Pan American Games gold, Rebeca Bernal has won gold at the Central American and Caribbean Games in both 2018 and 2023, and bronze at the 2020 CONCACAF Women’s Olympic Qualifying Tournament.
3) She’s a Liga MX Femenil Legend
Before moving to the NWSL, Rebeca Bernal spent her club career at Mexico’s Club de Fútbol Monterrey Femenil (also known as Rayadas de Monterrey or simply ‘Rayadas’).
She won four Liga MX Femenil titles with the club and made more than 200 league appearances, becoming the club’s third-all-time leading goalscorer and sixth in Liga MX Femenil history.
4) Her Rayadas Farewell Match Made History
When Rebeca Bernal left Rayadas for NWSL club Washington Spirit in February 2025, her send-off became the largest-ever farewell match for a female footballer in Mexico.
5) She Made an Immediate Impact in the NWSL
Bernal has made 41 appearances for Washington since her move and won the NWSL Challenge Cup in 2025.
United fans will be hoping she’ll adjust to life in the WSL with similar ease. The 29-year-old, who can operate in defence or midfield, will bring much-needed versatility and experience to Eva Olid’s Reds.
