Could Lotte Wubben-Moy Cement Her Place as an England Starter?

Lotte Wubben-Moy is yet to appear for the Lionesses in a major tournament, despite featuring in squads. But could that all be about to change?

Lotte Wubben-Moy has Been the Ultimate Squad Player

Wubben-Moy was part of the winning squads at Euro 2022 and 2025, as well as England’s run to the 2023 World Cup final.

Yet the 27-year-old has never made an appearance at a major tournament.

For a player with more than 100 Arsenal games under her belt – plus a Champions League and four domestic cup trophies on her CV – that is a remarkable statistic.

Her talent has never been in question, but until recently, the opportunity just hadn’t cropped up for her.

Lotte Wubben-Moy’s Chance Arrives

With Leah Williamson sidelined through injury, Wubben-Moy started England’s crucial World Cup qualifier against Spain at Wembley on Tuesday, 14 April – and delivered.

She partnered Esme Morgan at centre-back as England kept a clean sheet against the reigning world champions, with Wiegman full of praise afterwards.

“I’m very proud of them,” she said. “They were ready. They haven’t played that much together, but we trained and they showed up.”

Wubben-Moy then kept her place for the 500th fixture away at Iceland, helping England maintain their perfect record in qualifying.

“I feel good,” she told the BBC. “I feel like this is me and I’ve kind of just been waiting for the moment to be able to show it. Now I’m able to.”

Lotte Wubben-Moy’s Work Behind the Scenes

The opportunity may have come through Williamson’s absence, but Wubben-Moy was well ready for it.

This season, she has started 23 games for Arsenal in all competitions – a significant step up from 13 last year – and has played alongside several centre-back partners in the process.

And she has been candid about the mental challenges she’s faced to get to this point: “I’d be lying if I said there weren’t doubts,” she admitted.

“You constantly teeter on the line of confidence and belief but, ultimately, when you live life constantly wanting to push yourself, you will only ever get good results.”

With Williamson’s fitness still uncertain and the World Cup qualifying campaign heating up, Lotte Wubben-Moy looks well placed to finally make that starting spot her own.
