It’s surprising and interesting to know that England has started 2024 with a bang, especially after concluding devastatingly.
Sarina Wiegman flew the Lionesses to Spain in February for a warm-weather camp, where they played friendlies after missing out on the UEFA Women’s Nations League finals.
She hoped to try out new ideas, meet new players, and learn a lot about her team. As the players return to their clubs, the Dutchwoman appears to have achieved all her goals.
Aside from achieving her set goals, England’s performances and results also gave her bonuses. They easily overcame two good teams, Austria (7-2) on Friday and Italy (5-1) after four days. Wiegman told ITV that there were many positives about the week after the latter result.
Wiegman gave Grace Clinton her senior international debut recently and she made the day more memorable by scoring her first goal for the Lionesses. That should be the best compliment that can be given to her.
Clinton earned her first cap against Austria on Friday, marked the moment with a wonderful goal, was unable to score a second, and followed it up with another outstanding performance in the win over Italy.
According to Wiegman, England had many advantages at this camp, but it also faced a few challenges. The first occurred before the Lionesses assembled when Leah Williamson’s long-awaited return was further delayed by a minor hamstring injury that forced the Arsenal star to withdraw from the team.
Generally speaking, the Lionesses had a great time in Spain, with more wins than losses. If you love the video, check out more on the England YouTube channel.
