Liverpool have completed the signing of Japan youth international Mao Itamura from Feyenoord, who becomes the club’s fifth summer signing.
From her award-winning form in the Netherlands to her family’s Anfield connections, here’s everything you need to know about the up-and-coming 19-year-old star.
1) She’s the Reigning Women’s Eredivisie Player of the Year
Mao Itamura joins Liverpool having just been named Women’s Eredivisie Player of the Year for 2025-26, after scoring eight goals and providing six assists in 20 league appearances for Feyenoord.
She was also shortlisted for the Johan Cruyff Talent of the Year award, and her form helped Feyenoord qualify for European football for the first time in their history.
2) She’s a Rising Star For Japan
Mao Itamura played a key role in Japan’s Under-20 squad winning the Women’s Asian Cup in April 2026, adding to an international CV that already includes appearances at both the Under-17 and Under-20 Women’s World Cups.
3) Mao Itamura Left Feyenoord For a Record Fee
Mao Itamura’s move to Liverpool was completed for a record fee for Feyenoord, despite her contract in Rotterdam running until mid-2027.
She’ll be a big loss to the club, where she became a fan favourite thanks to her technical ability and super-fast dribbling.
Reflecting on her time in the Netherlands, she said: “Feyenoord has played an incredibly important role in my development, both as a footballer and as a person… I will always continue to follow Feyenoord with pride.”
4) Her Brother is a Big Liverpool Fan
Mao Itamura’s move to Liverpool has excited her family, particularly her eldest brother, who she describes as a big fan of the club. He’s even visited Liverpool on sightseeing trips before. “He’ll be the happiest,” she said about her move.
5) She’s a Self-Described “Flair Player”
Mao Itamura describes her game as built around dribbling. “My strength is dribbling and going all the way to the line,” she said. “I want to show everyone my dribbling skills… I also want to contribute to the team with my strengths, goals and assists.”
