It’s raining engagements in women’s football as USWNT Star Sophia Smith is officially engaged to her long-time partner, Michael Wilson of the Arizona Cardinals NFL Franchise. The pleasant news comes barely a month after Lionesses’ Jess Carter and long-term partner Ann-Katrin Berger announced engagement.
Smith made this announcement on her Instagram page after posting beautiful pictures with the caption “forever meant with you”.
Theirs is a beautiful and unique football love story. They met at Stanford University as student-athletes in the year 2019 and became friends. Shortly after, they started dating officially before they both entered the draft system in their respective deals.
In the 2020 NWSL draft, Smith was selected first overall, and Wilson was selected in the third round of the 2023 NFL equivalent.
Smith also won the SheBeliefs Cup and W Gold Cup with the USWNT in 2024, while Wilson concluded his rookie season with the Arizona Cardinals with 38 throws for 565 yards and three touchdowns.
Both lovers work over a thousand miles apart, therefore they are in a long-distance relationship. While speaking with the Women’s Game podcast, Smith said “It’s definitely hard and not ideal, because obviously when you’re with someone you want to see them all the time and be with them 24/7.”
However, because they were both in the early stages of their careers and must essentially be where they play, being together was simply not feasible for them.
She found consolation in the fact that Wilson is living the life of his dreams, doing well in his career and she’s there as his girlfriend to cheer him on.
The news of Sophia Smith and Micheal Wilson’s engagement has social media abuzz with congratulatory messages for the couple.
