The long-awaited summer cup between NWSL and Liga MX Femenil Clubs is finally around the corner. Participating teams will be from Liga MX Femenil in Mexico and the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) in the United States.
On Wednesday afternoon, the 12th of June, the two leagues unveiled their historic collaboration, which involved a large summer tournament that will match some of the top teams in women’s soccer. All 14 NWSL clubs will face off against the top teams from Liga MX Femenil, including powerhouses like Tigres UANL and Club América.
The competition has three rounds, with the first round starting on the 19th of July. Five groups will compete in the competition’s first round; two Liga MX Femenil sides will compete in the fifth group and one in the other four groups. After the group stage, the top teams will advance to the semifinals slated for early August. The CPKC Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri will play host to the doubleheader, home of the Kansas City Current, while the final game will take place at Toyota Field in San Antonio, Texas on Friday, October 25.
Both league commissioners, Jessica Berman (NWSL) and Mariana Gutierrez (Liga MX Femenil), are thrilled about this collaboration. According to Jessica Berman (NWSL), collaborating with LIGA MX Femenil will give their athletes more opportunities to compete, foster new rivalries, reach a larger audience base, and carry out their common goal of enhancing the importance, recognition, and caliber of their sport globally.
Liga MX Femenil Director, Mariana Gutierrez, also re-echoed the words of Jessica Berman. She stated that LIGA MX Femenil is proud and privileged to work together with the NWSL. She also urged everyone to celebrate the historic moments for women and sport.
The 33-match competition, which will start on July 19, will feature 30 group-stage matches before a four-team semifinal round on August 6.
