Barcelona Beat Lyon to Win UEFA Women’s Champions League Title

On the 25th of May in Bilbao, Spain, cheers were heard as Barcelona’s women’s team achieved a historic feat, winning their second consecutive UEFA Women’s Champions League title. The match, which ended in a 2-0 triumph over Olympique Lyonnais at San Mames Stadium, marked the winning team’s third overall win in the tournament.

But that wasn’t all; the win against Lyon women’s team also marked a historic quadruple for the Spanish giants, having already secured the domestic treble this season. Also, the win over Lyon broke Barca’s losing streak against the French club, which already has several UEFA Women’s Champions League titles.

Throughout the match, Barca dominated possession while Lyon struggled to find their rhythm despite their efforts. Thanks to the likes of Salma Paralluelo and Bonmati, Lyon’s attacks were stifled, resulting in the team’s inability to score any goals.

The 63rd minute saw Aitana Bonmati’s well-placed strike and Maria Caldentey’s beautiful assist turn into a goal. Towards the end of the game, every remaining doubt was silenced by Barcelona’s captain and top goal-scorer, Alexia Putellas, with a powerful left-footed strike. Although battling injuries, the goal showed her dedication to the team and exemplary resilience.

While the Barcelona women’s team says goodbye to Giraldez, the team is still a force to reckon with, and their win in Bilbao is proof.
