Late Holmberg Volley Denies Manchester United First WSL Win Under Eva Olid

Manchester United came agonisingly close to their first win under Eva Olid in Saturday’s teatime kickoff.

The Red Devils shocked Arsenal by taking the lead midway through the second half when Julia Zigiotti pounced on an under-hit pass from Georgia Stanway.

However, with just seconds remaining, Smilla Holmberg popped up to volley Leah Williamson’s cross into the roof of the net, denying United their first WSL victory of the campaign and Olid’s tenure.

Holmberg Rescues Toothless Arsenal

United’s start to the season has been anything but dazzling.

Olid’s side had looked shaky at the back during successive defeats to London City Lionesses and Chelsea, leaking seven goals across the two fixtures.

By contrast, Arsenal’s woes have been at the opposite end of the pitch. The Gunners have looked sluggish in front of goal during the early stages of the campaign, and it was no different here.

United were much improved at the back, showing impressive organisation as they frustrated Arsenal and took their opportunities to venture forward on the counter.

Elisabeth Terland had two of the best chances early on, drawing a double save from Misa Rodriguez, who occupied the Arsenal goal.

Renee Slegers’ side responded with some jabs of their own; Mariona Caldentey’s strike whistled over, and Stina Blackstenius’ header had to be tipped beyond the bar by Phallon Tullis-Joyce.

United continued to stand tall at the back and were rewarded when Zigiotti put them in front on 67 minutes.

However, United’s defence finally succumbed to a wave of late Arsenal pressure, with substitute Holmberg rescuing a point for the home side in the 95th minute and extending their WSL unbeaten streak to 20 games.

Positive Signs for Olid’s United

Despite Holmberg spoiling what would have been an excellent trip to the Emirates for United, there was plenty for Olid to feel positive about.

Her game plan to frustrate Arsenal proved effective, and it almost resulted in the Manchester side’s first three points of the season.

Arsenal, however, will have to rediscover their golden touch if they want to knock title holders Manchester City off their perch.

City made it three wins from three as they came from behind to beat Liverpool 4-2 on Friday night.
